Dahmer’s close relationship with his father is depicted in the controversial and hugely successful Netflix series Monster. Dr. Phil aired the three-day special “In The Presence of Evil: Face to Face with Jeffrey Dahmer” in the US this week, which aims to tell the killer’s “true story” and explore what made him a serial killer.

In the interview recorded in the 1990s, the 86-year-old father recalls an incident that nearly exposed his son. Because Jeffrey barely stopped the father from opening the wooden box containing the severed head of Anthony Sears (26), who was murdered in 1989.

The father suspects pornography in his son

Lionel Dahmer suspected that the box contained pornography, about which the mother repeatedly complained. He searched for a tool to open it, but Jeffrey caught his father and complained that he was not given “one square foot” of his own space.

In the end, Jeffrey convinced his father to wait until the next day to open it. Also to protect the grandmother who was sitting in the next room and overheard the argument between the two. But Lionel should never look in the box.

“Somehow I’m happy, but somehow not.”

“In a way I’m glad, but in a way not, because I didn’t ask more about it at the time. Because I would probably have gone crazy if I’d seen the content,” says Lionel. The next day Jeffrey let his dad take a look — and there were porn magazines in the box. .

After Jeffrey’s arrest, the father and son discuss the incident again. I asked him, “What would you have done, Jeff, if you had opened it?” ’ And he said something like, ‘It would have been game over,’ something unemotional, noncommittal.” Which is why Lionel is sure: He could have saved lives if he had taken more action at the time.
