McQuilt wishes you a good morning!
Summer has said goodbye, autumn is cold and rainy and not at all golden. But this can still be. After the biggest tide of travel has subsided, it’s now quieter on the streets, at train stations and airports. The end of September is one of the best times to travel, if you exclude the madness of Oktoberfest. The 27th of September has been World Tourism Day since 1980, declared by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Travel educates those who overcome limits in nature and on paper, and also overcome mental limits. In 2022, World Tourism Day was themed “Rethink Tourism” – an idea that makes sense given the travel brought about by a globally infamous virus over the past two and a half years.
The last time we heard from another traveler who embarked on a particularly long and amazing tour was 25 years ago today. On September 27, 1997, the last signals reached Earth from the Mars robot Pathfinder, which arrived at Ares Vallis on the neighboring planet on July 4 of the same year, and has been sending images of its surface ever since. However, Pathfinder, along with its Sojourner rover, have provided important insights into the surface and atmosphere of the Red Planet that would not have been obtained from afar. Above all, the mission contributed to the spread of a new medium: because all the pictures and films were distributed on the Internet, which since then has changed our world like no other technology since the printed book. However, Path Finder hasn’t changed the world of Mars or the picture we have of it. It’s barren and empty out there, and a manned return mission certainly won’t happen in this century, and most likely won’t happen in this millennium.
It’s a shame, because Pathfinder is still around and can work even though the technology is more than 25 years old. In Andy Weir’s wonderful novel “The Martian,” that’s exactly what happens: When the Mars station’s communications systems malfunction, stranded astronaut Mark Watney picks up the missing traveler from Ares Vallis to restore contact with Earth. After all, dry Mars keeps electronics from rotting and rusting as quickly. But we prefer to make the trip to Mars in our minds first.
Tuesday reading tips
save: Prime Day was on Amazon in mid-July, and Black Friday at the end of November will offer two-week discounted campaigns. The commercial giant has now devised another campaign whose prices will be lowered in all areas, including technology. Amazon calls the battle of discounts October 11-12 from Prime Access early sale, in German: Early offers on Amazon devices. In all likelihood, there will also be discounts on Apple products, but certainly not for the latest products like the iPhone 14 range. On the other hand, you can expect lower prices for discontinued models, such as the 9th generation iPad, current iPads Pro, and Macbooks Pro with 14 and 16 inches, which will likely have successors in October
Another error: Another iOS 16 maintenance update is expected soon, and a new bug will require it. On Apple Support forums and on Reddit, users have reported that they can no longer open recorded Final Cut or iMovie videos in Theater mode, which is available on iPhones 13 series and later. All programs indicate that cinema mode cannot be activated. Apple hasn’t officially acknowledged the issue yet, but it should only be a matter of time.
side effects: Unlike on Mac, you cannot change app icons. However, since iOS 12, it has become possible with the help of the Shortcuts app to provide shortcuts with any icon and place them on the screen. Tap on it and it opens the actual app. Disadvantages of the method: After the tip, a large banner opens at the top of the screen before you can actually interact with the app. Designer Parker Ortolani has now discovered that this animation has either disappeared on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max or has moved to Dynamic Island. There is also no delay between clicking on the shortcut and opening the app.
guidance: India wants to become independent from the US GPS and in the future to rely on its own NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) system. NavIC relies on eight satellites that have been deployed in geostationary orbit over India since 2006 to provide better local navigation while also covering other parts of Asia. This is bad news for smartphone makers looking to sell in India, Reuters reports. Additional components will make production more expensive, and compatible devices are unlikely to be available before 2024.
disassembledIt didn’t take the iFixit repair specialists long to take apart the new Apple Watch Ultra to determine its repairability. Despite some screws that can be easily loosened, the repair will be quite complicated. The reason for this is some seals that act like glue which even the specialists from iFixit destroyed when taking them apart. The disassembly reveals, among other things, the watch’s high battery capacity, with the battery carrying 2.1 watt-hours of energy, 60 percent more than that of the Apple Watch Series 8.
a test: In our testing of the iPhone 14, we also noticed that the camera was slightly better than that of the iPhone 13, especially in poor lighting conditions. Our British colleague Karen Haslam adds an in-camera motion mode test, which is also inspiring. The benchmarks aren’t monotonous: the iPhone 14’s improvements over the previous model are great, but they’re certainly measurable. Unless you’re looking to replace the iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 is a worthwhile upgrade, despite the higher price tag in many countries due to external conditions.
By-products: iOS 16 and watchOS 9 are getting a lot of exciting new features, so some of them can be overlooked. Macworld author Dan Moren highlights three particular innovations: the weather app is finally getting better, and the takeover of Dark Sky, whose app won’t work until the end of the year, is finally being felt. The new functions of the compass app, where you can set points or orient yourself to the last point, are not only practical in the wild: imagine that you forgot where you parked. And especially nice: WLAN passwords can now be viewed, making sharing with devices other than Apple devices that much easier.
