MDR Documentary Series Beyond the Abyss – Life in Luzitz accompanies new crime drama series LAUCHHAMMER

Leipzig (ots) –

Lusatia – an area formed by lignite – and its inhabitants are the focus of the new four-part documentary series by MDR and rbb: “Beyond the Abyss – Life in Lusatia” shows how major changes in the coal region have affected the shape of people today and help define their lives. The new documentary series that accompanies the ARD crime series “LAUCHHAMMER – Tod in der Lausitz”, in the ARD media center from September 28 (365 days) and on MDR TV on September 29 and October 2, each time at 8:15 pm, aired.

Lusatia is on the verge of phasing out coal – and thus is an example of the change that many areas of this country have experienced, are experiencing, or will experience. But what does the ongoing disturbances do to people in the coal areas? The documentary series “Beyond the Abyss – Life in Lusatia” shows the real area, and the context in which the crime story takes place in the fantasy series “Lauchhammer – Death in Lusatia”. In four 45-minute episodes, she presents the journalistic background that has no place in the novel. The series accompanies its protagonists over several months, allows them to speak for themselves and largely dispenses with commentary.

Onlookers meet, for example, with the engineer supervising the dismantling of the prefab buildings in Hoyerswerda that her father had once built; The ice cream seller, who in his first life was a “power plant worker” in “Schwartz Pompeii” and in his second life he opened the first sex shop in the area, and then in his third life he opened his own ice cream parlor “Lake Station”. They also meet the Queen of Blossom, who in her spare time posts videos of the abandoned cities of Lusatia and trains fans of the ice hockey team; the entrepreneur who was able to settle the first startups from the auto industry a stone’s throw from a coal-fired power plant; The Sorbin family, whose house had to give way to coal, who had just fulfilled their dream of an American farm and never wanted to dress up as their ancestors again.

The documentary series “Behind the Abyss – Life in Lusatia” shows what political decisions and billions of dollars from federal coffers do to local residents, how they shape the changes imposed on them, and the processes they take of their own making. Do they succeed in creating prospects for the region and opposing immigration?
