Joko Winterscheidt won the TV award at the ProSieben competition

The Wannsee Conference was awarded the German Television Award for TV Film of the Year. At the ceremony held on Wednesday evening in Cologne, the ZDF production managed to beat the ARD film “Ein Leben Lang” and the RTL film “Dasweiße Schweigen”.

As producer Oliver Berbin said in his acceptance speech, the film about the organization of the Holocaust by Nazi leaders in 1942 was sold in more than 50 countries.

Presenter and musician Giovanni Zarella was awarded the prestigious trophy for Best Solo Performance as an Entertainer. His first comment was, “Okay, that’s cool.”

But then Zarella began a far-reaching acceptance letter, which was addressed for the first time to his wife Jana Ina Zarella. “Honey, you know very well: the past few years, they haven’t always been easy for us and they haven’t always been easy,” he said. “You made me a better man, a better person, a better father. I love you more than anything.” Many tears flowed from the 45-year-old.

It was one of the emotional highlights of the television party, which was produced in Cologne, where awards in about 20 categories went to champions from the television industry. The award was split into two consecutive evenings in 2022. Wednesday’s show was the second – with a high density of celebrities.

He had already won the class last year. “I would never have thought it was really realistic,” said Winterschedt, a bit surprised by his title defense.

The hard break in the course of the awards ceremony, moderated by Barbara Schönberger, was the change from war correspondents to the next category – this was about the Best Entertainment Reality category. Despite significantly higher ratings, it’s not the bush camp RTL that’s prevalent here, but the “Kampf der Realitystars” format running on RTL2. Also known as the influencer, presenter Kathy Hummels couldn’t hold back the tears in her acceptance speech as she thanked her four-year-old son for giving up on her so much for the show.

The German Television Prize was awarded in a total of 30 categories. Eight awards went to ARD, six to ZDF, three to RTL and three to ProSiebenSat. Pay channel Sky received two awards, the second streaming service Netflix, MagentaTV, 3sat, RTL2 and Prime Video got one award each.

Jury Chairman Wolf Bauer explained that German television is currently distinguished by an “astounding diversity of content, formats and viewpoints”. In general, television has become more ready for experience, more diverse and therefore more modern. However, Bauer acknowledged that there is still an important task to be involved in getting more female creators involved in the creative processes. “There’s definitely still a long way to go here.” And in all categories, only 29 percent of the awards went to women.
