The Netflix movie “Broad Peak” tells the life of Polish mountaineer Maciej Berbeka and is based on a true story. Berbeka was one of the greatest and most daring mountaineers in Poland, but a momentous tragedy occurred during an expedition to the 12th highest mountain on Earth.

Maciej Berbeka was an experienced climber and member of the Ice Warriors. The Ice Warriors were a group of professionals who dominated the winter mountaineering scene, particularly in the 1980s, when they made their first winter eight thousand.

Berbeka looked for the challenge and focused on the winter ascent of eight thousand people around the world. This type of mountaineering is the most dangerous and dangerous. This is due in part to inhumane conditions, including extreme cold, especially low air pressure, storms and deep snow.

Berbika managed to reach the summit of Manaslu in the Nepalese Himalayas without supplemental oxygen in 1984 and met Chu Oyo in the Himalayas a year later.

In 1988, Maciej Berbica was the first person to reach the sub-peak (Rocky Peak), one of the five summits of Karakorum. The mountain range is located on the border between Pakistan and China.

More than two decades later, in 2013, Berbeka decided to climb Broad Peak again. This time with Adam Bellecki, Thomas Kowalski and Arthur Mike.

The Netflix movie makes clear his motivation: Berbeka didn’t reach his full potential the first time: he didn’t reach his actual Broad Peak the first time.

“It’s hard to live with feeling like a swindler. I’ve spent the past quarter century trying to get over that feeling.”

Although the group reached the summit on March 6, concerns were raised when 58-year-old Berbiga and 27-year-old Kowalski failed to reach Camp 4 at 7,400m on the way back.

Maciej Berbeka and Tomasz Kowalski had to set up camp at night in bad weather because they could not get back to camp in time. While Berbeka likely tried to spend the night at 7,900 metres, Kowalski was swinging at around 7,960 metres.

The two climbers were not found in a subsequent search. The campaign leader, Krzysztof Wielecki, announced their presumed deaths just two days later, on March 8th.

The body of Tomasz Kowalski was found on a ridge at an altitude of about 7,960 meters and was buried at a depth of about 100 metres.

Maciej Berbica’s body has not been found.

Broad Peak is said to be one of the most dangerous in the world, with three more men dying just four months later trying to reach the summit: Iranian climbers Aidin Bozorgi, Pouya Keivan and Mojtaba Jarahi.

Director Leszek Dawid wants to touch the audience on an emotional level and tell the film that tells from Berbica’s point of view.

“I want Broad Peak to be a story about a man who struggles against nature, cold, fear and exhaustion… I want viewers to get close enough to the protagonist to understand this longing. To help them empathize with the main character, I will use personal narrative, and gradually allow them to take Berbica’s point of view. “.
