A mixture of Tigrinya and Swiss German is spoken at home: Teenager Jo (Hermila Tclap) lives with her mother, Smrt (Lola Brahto) in Zurich.

Samrat fled Eritrea to give her daughter opportunities in Switzerland that she did not have herself.

Facing the past

In order to be able to afford the tiny apartment, Samrat struggles to get a job at the hospital – she dreams of training as a midwife.

When Jo asks her mother more questions about her identity and her past in Eritrea, Samrat has to deal with painful memories: she finds support in an exchange with Yamani (Tedros Tekleberhan), who also works at the hospital and has escaped from Eritrea.

dynamic mother and daughter

Screenwriter and director Katerina Muna in Zurich is behind the film, Smrt revolves around topics such as war trauma, stories of escape and sexual violence – even people who haven’t experienced any of this can find themselves in the story.

First and foremost, the film focuses on the mother-daughter relationship: “The two women begin the story almost in symbiosis, so for Samrat, the moment Joe begins to distance himself from her mother is especially distressing,” Katrina Mona says in a press release.

“Monster”

After the death of his wife, Dr. Nate Daniels (Idris Elba) returns to the village in South Africa where she grew up. Along with his two daughters Meredith (Eanna Haley) and Nora (Lea Jeffreys) he wants to address the loss there.

But the holidays turn into a journey of terror: a lion instigated by poachers pursues the family and the three must fight for their lives.

the monster

It is important for Elba that the lion not be the beast: “Sadness is a beast. “Pain is better, survival is a beast,” he says. “Lions do not hunt humans unless humans disturb their natural environment, which is what happens with poaching.”

The film lasts 93 minutes, and director Baltasar Cormacor made some extended sequences from one take: “I wanted to give the feeling of being stuck with these people,” he explains in “Variety.”

« All about Martin Sutter. Except for the truth.”

“Fiction is usually healthier than reality,” says author Martin Suter. Appropriately, German director Andre Schaefer’s film oscillates between documentary and fiction, as we learn about Sutter’s characters and their stories.

Based on the novels, the 74-year-old tells how he writes – and gives insight into his own life, like the apartment building in Zurich he grew up in.
