Nearly six years after director Peter Jackson last took us into the wonderful world around Middle-earth, the “Lord of the Rings” revamp finally comes. Amazon* announced in 2017 that it was working on a series based on the J.R.R. Tolkien stories. One thing is for sure: the series will probably be the most expensive ever produced. The budget is estimated at more than one billion US dollars. The new “Lord of the Rings” saga beats the former boss: HBO’s ten-part mini-series “The Pacific” was filmed in 2020 and cost “only” about US$217 million.

The start date of the new fantasy series has also been set. On September 2, 2022, Season 1 will begin online on Amazon Prime Video. Until then, we’re gathering all the new information about where to cast, filming location and more for you here.

Trailers for the “Lord of the Rings” series from Amazon

After there was a lot of information and first graphic material on Amazon’s upcoming “Lord of the Rings” series early on, there’s now also real animated material, of course. For example in the first official trailer:

The first teaser titled “Lord of the Rings” for the series stirred mixed feelings

Reactions to the first harassment were initially mixed. In the video, we see misty landscapes and molten metal seemingly making its way through mountain ranges. The whole thing drowns out the voice of a woman talking about the famous episodes of the saga. Finally, one of the rings is made of the material.

Criticism of the clip: It all sounds like a really bad animation – not as epic as one would have liked for this multi-million dollar project. Now it turns out: That’s right, the video is not an animation. Fire, smoke, mountains – all recreated on a miniature set.

Right Before You Begin: The Latest Trailer

Shortly before the first two episodes of “The Rings of Power,” another trailer has now appeared. This comes with epic music, great visuals, and fresh impressions and should raise the expectations of Middle-earth fans even more. Watch the trailer here:

Story: What is the Lord of the Rings series?

The creators of the new “Lord of the Rings” series made one thing clear from the start: The seasons will not be remakes of the hit movies. Instead, the series is set to take place many years before the adventures of Frodo and his companions. More precisely: a whole 3000 years ago. And this also shows: many old faces from famous films will not return to the set. However, the characters Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) and Elrond (Hugo Weaving) are said to appear in the series – but it has also been confirmed that the elves will be represented with the youngsters.

Back to the plot: The series revolves around the so-called Second Age of Middle-earth. Among other things, it should concern the rise and fall of the island kingdom of Númenor and the Elven capital at Lindon. In addition, the story of the Dark Lord Sauron will be retold.

Screenplay, Direction & Partners.

Of course, the stories by author JRR Tolkien serve as a model for the content. The series was developed by Patrick McKay and John DePaine. Much is also known about the trend. The first two episodes are handled by JA Bayone. The Spanish film director is best known for his work on Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Also committed as director: Wayne Yip (“Misfits”, “Doctor Who”). And last but not least, Amazon* also brought director Charlotte Brandstrom on board. She is responsible for the third episode. Jeremy Sully was hired for the soundtrack. The American composer also provided the music for several “Harry Potter” films. Brian Cogman, screenwriter and producer on “Game of Thrones,” takes on a consulting role.

Where was The Lord of the Rings filmed?

Initially, Scotland was discussed as a location for filming. In the end, the experimenters and testers won. The Lord of the Rings series, like the films, will be filmed in New Zealand. However, only the episodes of the first season should be listed here. Then he goes to Great Britain.
