The German Film Award 2022 begins with unpleasant music and comedic periods. Fortunately, it gets better as the evening progresses.

Berlin – “Lola instead of Corona”. The evening starts well. After a short single-player movie, referring to Rocky for some reason, and a very unpleasant interlude, presenter Catherine Bauerfind launched a real fireworks show. Direct Target and Victims are not only the nominees for the German Film Award 2022, but also the audience.

At first, it doesn’t mention much of a first-class award ceremony. Instead, it feels like you’re exposed to another satirical news movie from public radio, complete with jokes about inflation and fuel discounts, and the actors’ hairstyles or clothes. The sufferers seem compelled to laugh. Even the public at home, if someone tunes in, may have few options. However, these laughs may not have really been intended. Rather, it is a defense mechanism against the pain caused by nicks in the Bauerfeind repertoire. It’s something of a Comedy Central Roast with no humor.

German Film Award 2022: Political as expected

Matthias Schweigofer, whose name is pronounced Bauerfind in English due to his success in Hollywood, also did not deliver. During the evening, the suffering of the most famous star must continue. After all, Secretary of State for Culture Claudia Roth (the Greens) seems to be having fun. No sooner had the first film awards been given out than the pain slowly subsided. But then suddenly, attempts by Bauerfeind and other guests to imitate the language of youth make their way. “Dude, I know where your bed is, go away.”

After about an hour it becomes more serious. For a few minutes, it is about Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. In a video message from Kyiv, Wladimir Klitschko thanked the “soldiers of truth” who made images of the brutal war accessible to a world audience. We’re talking about documentary filmmakers, one of the many award categories this evening.

It also became political in speeches by honorary award winner Jürgen Jurges and Andreas Kleinert, who won the Lola Award for Best Director for Dear Thomas. In their letters, they both stand against rearmament and call for a global rethink. Kleinert is speaking out against the Bundeswehr’s €100 billion special fund. There is a lot of applause for both award-winning photographer Jorges and Kleinert.

German Film Awards 2022: Lots of Comedy

The impulsive medium managed to bring the audience and award-winners back to the desolate reality of German television from the special moments. Even if the appearance was ridiculously intended and Bauerfeind deliberately annoyed the guests, the question arises: should the German film award be raised like any other comedy show? After the “Lola” award for Best Male Leading Role for Albrecht Schösch (“Dear Thomas”), his talk became emotional, but on his way to his seat, the actress was stopped by Catherine Bauerfind, who tried her hand at humor again. . Suddenly everything seemed absurd again, the special moment soon vanished. After all, the comedic entry of Christoph Maria Herbst was a success. You can’t go very wrong with him on stage, as everyone should know him as Bernd Stromberg.

One other scene or scene, whether musical or episodic before the winner is announced, gives a bad glimpse when watching: Are German films and award ceremonies intentionally small? At least that’s what some work suggests. In addition, the event was recorded hours before broadcast (ARD, June 24, 2022, 10:45 p.m.), that is, it was not shown live on TV. It was clear at the beginning of the program who would receive the 2022 German Film Award.

German Film Award 2022: More recognition would be good

It is commendable how the costume designers are able to explain, even with short scenes, what led them to make their decisions about the film in question before the awards ceremony. An excellent idea that not only makes you want to go to the cinema, but also praises the craft of the film and enhances appreciation. The same principle is also applied in the categories of makeup and sound design. Unfortunately, something like this is missing a night when the movies and the hundreds of people involved should be in the spotlight.

An evening in Berlin always has some beautiful and emotional moments. And the show wasn’t as bad as it had been at first. Unfortunately, due to poor reviews in recent years, it is rarely noticed by anyone outside the exhibition hall. (lrg)
