For the third time in a row, the national team plays 1-1 against a well-known opponent. Hansi Flick is still satisfied after the equalizer with England – despite the draw shortly before the end.
Questions for national coach Hansi Flick after the 1-1 draw in the Nations League Munich against England.
Question: I made seven changes to the eleventh starting. Only Neuer, Rudiger, Kimmich and Muller have played from the beginning again. Is this your WM hub?
Answer: We are not so looking forward to the World Cup. We said the four games are there to check out our dimension. Today’s match was as we planned it. The way it was done was great for the fans. Too bad we didn’t reward ourselves. We played against a very strong opponent in attack. At Manuel Neuer we have a goalkeeper in our ranks who is absolutely world class. It is and always will be for me. It’s a shame we couldn’t win with the penalty kick.
Q: You’ve played 1-1 against top opponents three times. Why can’t the team save the win in the end?
Answer: We played against England. England is a great football country. The English Premier League is the best league in the world. That’s why I’m proud of the way the team played football. We put pressure on the opponent and forced him to shoot long distances. I loved the way we played football. We’ve already partially gambled there. We had chances, but in the end there was no point. We have to work on it.
Question: In terms of the World Cup, how important is it for the team to be rewarded soon with a win?
Answer: This is what distinguishes the team. want to win. I know from my experience with the national team, as well as with Bayern Munich, that wins are important for self-confidence, for self-image within the team, that you can win matches, that you have quality. This is what we are working on, these are the things we have to work towards.
Q: It was a clear penalty for England manager Gareth Southgate. Do you share this opinion?
Answer: I don’t think Nico Schlutterbeek ever sees Harry Kane. I can’t say more than that. The referee blew the whistle. I’ve talked to him for a long time. This is the case in football.
Q: Was the most important thing in the first two games that everyone showed that they could be part of this team?
Answer: Everything moves quickly in football and in life. A lot can change. We hope everyone stays healthy. I have repeatedly emphasized that the team is of high quality and that we are very satisfied with our selection in terms of performance in all positions not for nothing. It’s all about this. It’s important for the team to show everyone that they can continue to help. We also played without seven or eight known players in Amsterdam. The quality in Holland and against England was good.
Question: How would you rate Ilkay Gündogan’s performance today and could he also play with Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka?
Answer: It is true that we always think of many things in terms of composition. If you have stable defenders, you can also play with three in the back without a doubt. David Raum has shown his ability to play well on the left side and Jonas Hoffmann on the right. So that’s a consideration for us, but we’ll play the usual 4-2-3-1 games, but it’s our turn to shut things down and then we have other options to go to Qatar.
Q: England’s Harry Kane didn’t play his best game and he was there at the end. Is front position the biggest question mark for you in the World Cup?
Answer: For me it is important that the players are trusted. We have quality and we have players who have the ability to improve. We want to make everyone better to continue the development of Qatar.
Q: Nico Schlutterbeek received a penalty before the end for the second time. How can you help him so that it does not happen again?
Answer: I think today was very unfortunate. It’s something that happens. I don’t blame him. It turned out to be a real boost. The way he plays football, very confident. Even if something goes wrong, it continues to work. These are the things we need.
