Bayern Munich reached the final of the German Basketball Championship against Alba Berlin by winning the Telekom Baskets Bonn team.

The Munich team won the fifth duel 87:74 (42:44) against the Rhinelanders and won a best of five series 3:2. The Berlin players had already reached the final in three matches against Ludwigsburg last Friday

The first of the five potential finals will take place in Berlin on Friday. Unlike previous rounds, the series will be played in continuous alternation between home and away matches. In the last match on June 22, the new title holder will be determined.

Before the eyes of the Honorary President of Bavaria Uli Hoeness, the Munich team started out dominantly in Bonn. Eight minutes later, coach Andrea Trenchieri’s side was up by 22:8. The hosts needed the superb Peter Jackson Cartwright to get back into the game. The American, who was voted the best professional in the league, turned the game around with 20 points before the end of the first half. Even defensive specialist Carsten Tada made it 44:42 after 20 minutes with two successful long-range shots.

After the break, Bayern got off to a better start. Five minutes into the third round, the Euroleague quarter-finalists advanced 56:51 and, after leading 7-0, entered the final quarter by eight points.

With Bayern superior in the rebound duel and Jackson Cartwright improving and under control, Boone was unable to get back into the game. Six minutes to the end, Trenchery’s team was 79:67 ahead, and despite the frenetic final stage, they were no longer under pressure. Jackson Cartwright was the best shooter with 25 points. Nick Wheeler Babb (18 points) scored the most successful goal for Bayern Munich. (dpa)
