Conflicts – the war against Ukraine: this is the situation – politics

Kyiv/Moscow (dpa) – In eastern Ukraine, Ukrainian forces continue to resist Russian attacks, but the situation is getting worse.

“We take the position, and we still hold the position,” President Volodymyr Zelensky was quoted by Interfax of Ukraine as saying. “Nevertheless, we have every opportunity to continue the fight in this direction,” stressed the 44-year-old.

The Russian leadership once again sharply attacked the West for its stance on the Ukraine war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov could not start his scheduled trip to Serbia due to the closure of the airspace – the blockade was criticized by some “NATO members” as “outrageous”. Great Britain announced the delivery of new arms shipments to Ukraine. Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth arrived Monday afternoon for a two-day visit to the Ukrainian port city of Odessa.

Ukraine’s military spokesman, Alexander Motocyanik, reported heavy fighting “along the entire front line in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions.” The Russian Air Force carried out 39 air strikes outside eastern Ukraine. Zelensky stressed that Ukrainian forces are achieving “gradual” successes in the neighboring Kharkiv region. However, the most dangerous situation is in the Zaporizhia region, where the Russian army threatens the capital of the region. Silinsky visited the area on Sunday and was also right on top.

According to the Ukrainian army, another high-ranking Russian officer with the rank of general was killed near Popasna in the Luhansk region. And a reporter for the official Russian television reported in this regard. However, the Kremlin was satisfied with the course of the war. Army spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying that he was “optimistic” about the development of the “special military operation in Ukraine”.

Lavrov finds no way to reach Serbia

Because Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Montenegro closed the airspace of the Russian foreign minister’s plane, Lavrov was forced to cancel his two-day visit to Belgrade. Because of the aggressive war on Ukraine, the foreign minister is also subject to Western sanctions.

Lavrov said in a video conference with foreign journalists in Moscow on Monday that the European Union and NATO were trying to prevent Serbia from choosing its partners freely. The West wants the Balkans for itself, just as Ukraine claims. A Kremlin spokesman had earlier criticized the closure of European airspace, calling it a “hostile act”.

Roth: Culture is under attack – Scholz in Lithuania

Minister of State for Culture Ruth traveled to the Black Sea cultural city of Odessa at the invitation of her Ukrainian counterpart. “We want to show that we are there, we want to show how culture is attacked,” the green politician said at the start of the trip. Offers of humanitarian aid are rarely mentioned in the discussions. For the first time since the start of the Ukraine war, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (Social Democratic Party) will visit Lithuania on Tuesday, a country that borders Russia and feels particularly threatened by nuclear power.

Britain supplies missile launchers

Britain plans to supply Ukraine with multiple long-range missile launchers for the first time in its war against Russian aggression. The British government has said that it will send several M270 missile systems with a range of 80 kilometers to the country, according to BBC information, there should be three systems initially.

High-precision weapons will enable Ukraine to better defend itself against brutal Russian attacks, which have used long-range artillery to level cities. Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to attack other targets in Ukraine if long-range weapons are delivered.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles neither confirmed nor denied the delivery of German Leopard 2 battle tanks and anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine on Monday. In response to a question from a journalist from Telecinko TV, she said that this was a “very sensitive topic” and required “the greatest discretion”. The usually well-informed newspaper El Pais, citing Defense Ministry sources, reported that Spain was preparing to deliver about 40 Leopard 2 A4 main battle tanks and ground-based anti-aircraft missiles.

Used tanks captured from Germany in 1995 are currently decommissioned and still need to be prepared for use. This will be the first time that Ukraine will receive Western main battle tanks in combat against the Russian army. In Germany, politicians from the ruling SPD party have so far confirmed that there is an informal agreement between NATO countries not to supply such weapons.

Grain shipments across the Black Sea?

According to a media report, the Russian leadership has approved a scheme with Kyiv and Ankara to release grain shipments from the previously banned port of Odessa. The Kremlin daily Ivestia described the planned operation on Monday, citing government departments, that “the Turkish army will undertake mine clearance in the sovereign waters of the neighboring country, and will also escort ships to neutral waters.” However, observers are of the view that the chance of the proposal being implemented is slim. The Russian blockade of Ukrainian ports has led to fears of famine, especially in poor African countries, where the country is a major grain exporter.
