Actual costs and consumption: the Audi RS Q8 TFSI Quattro

To what extent can an economical and inexpensive V8 Turbo SUV be used in everyday life? We tested and calculated.

According to the laws of physics, cars of the Audi RS Q8 caliber are not easy when it comes to costs. 600 horsepower, a four-liter capacity, a 2.4-ton free weight and acceleration values of less than four seconds are usually a guarantee of excessive tank orgies in addition to high taxes and insurance costs. Especially when the car is as fun as our test editor Clemens Hirschfeld can attest. After a test drive, he wonders if Albert Einstein was wrong in his physics theories, given all the driving dynamics the RS Q8 demonstrates thanks to all-wheel drive, rear axle steering and electromechanical roll stabilization. But does the positive impression still exist when you look at the consumption characteristics and cost balance yourself?

Our test consumption

Audi sets a standard WLTP consumption of 13.2 liters for the top SUV model. In testing, this converts to 14.1 liters of Super Plus, resulting in a fuel cost of €28.34 for 100 kilometers. At 10.4 liters, the Eco consumption is much lower than the WLTP level; The gasoline equivalent required for 100 km drops to 20.90 euros. The sporty driving style brings the consumption up to 17.5 liters and thus the fuel price reaches 35.16 euros per 100 kilometres. These values are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal (06/03/2022 / Super Plus: 2.01 € / liter).

Achim Hartmann

Test consumption consists of 70% of the passenger tour and 15% of both the Eco and Sport.

Monthly maintenance costs

As with any other car, vehicle taxes are due year after year on the Audi RS Q8. It costs 776 euros for the large SUV. According to Allianz Direct, liability insurance costs €479 for the same period. A partially comprehensive upgrade adds another €326. There is an additional €1,145 due for the all inclusive policy. The bottom line is that monthly maintenance costs up to €708 if the RS Q8 is driven 15,000 kilometers per year. If the mileage is doubled, the Audi costs 1,284 euros per month. We leave the loss in value in this account.

The cost of the Audi RS Q8 in the test car is 141,500 euros. The base is available from 133,000 euros.

This is how it is tested

The car and sport engine depreciation test consists of three different depreciation cycles. The so-called “passenger consumption” accounts for 70 per cent. This is a trip from home to work, and it averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical eco-roll, the length of which is about 275 kilometers, is included in the rating by 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is calculated on the lap of the sporty driver. The length is about the same as the eco lap, but the track has a greater proportion of the highway and therefore higher average speeds. The basis for calculating fuel costs is always the price displayed on the “More tanks” portal on the day the article was created.

Monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear parts costs and vehicle taxes based on assumed annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 km without loss of value. Calculation based on trial depreciation, three-year retention period, no-claims SF12 liability category and all-inclusive insurance with Allianz Direct, including discounts for garage parking and restrictions on certain drivers (no accidents/annually 15,000 km/resident in code area Postal 70174 / Not less than 21 / Partner driver over 25 years old.
