It’s often the little gestures that explain the big picture. When it was confirmed that Liverpool had reached the 2022 Champions League final after beating Villarreal, Jurgen Klopp quickly sent messages to two players who were watching TV at home in England. Reese Williams and Nat Phillips slipped into the Liverpool starting line-up last year at the end of a difficult season with numerous injuries and made it possible for the club to finish third by a wide margin. Without them, the German wrote, this would not have been possible, since without them Liverpool would not have reached the final.
Jürgen Klopp’s recipe for success: competence and passion
This anecdote shows how Jürgen Klopp became one of the most successful football coaches ever: everyone counts, and everyone is a building block to a goal that can only be achieved together or not at all. Technical competence along with emotional connection are the cornerstones of his success. It makes it unique because it puts the feeling on par with the pursuit of success – of a sporting and economic nature – or at least conveys it to players and fans.

Dealing with defeats
Jurgen Klopp’s coaching career has been a career shaped by setbacks such as several final defeats as well as long-awaited unexpected victories. After two titles in the Liverpool Cup this year, the Premier League title seemed within reach until the last day of the match, but Manchester City showed no weakness. Klopp was then formed and was already focused on the next task ahead.
Jurgen Klopp in Liverpool
Klopp has been at Liverpool since 2015, and he made difficult progress initially. The Reds, as the city’s players in northwest England are called, made their way through the middle of the Premier League at the time. Despite reaching the Europa League final in his first season, the first doubts about Klopp soon surfaced. But a relentless belief in success and a smiling optimism even in difficult moments are as familiar to Klopp as the emotional outbursts he experiences on the sidelines. And after Liverpool had already reached the Champions League final in 2018, it was followed by victory in this most important club competition in world football in 2019.
Breakthrough in Liverpool
But most important to the fans, the club and the city was winning the English Championship for the first time in 30 years. Since at least then, Klopp has been a sort of sanctuary in a town that produced the Beatles, and he’s been slamming the champs. The fact that the championship title was achieved in the year of Corona at all times and thus was associated with restrictions cannot dampen enthusiasm. In the meantime, people are even considering erecting a monument to Klopp – which he banned by referring to his currently unplanned departure from town or life.
Jurgen Club Special
In particular, Klopp keeps a low profile, as he lives with his wife Ola in Formby, a posh seaside town near Liverpool. He doesn’t think much about appearing on TV shows or on social media, even though he does seem eloquent and relaxed in interviews. He also dismisses his team’s productions for TV and Netflix documentaries, like what Pep Guardiola did with Manchester City: There won’t be videos of embarrassing motivational cries like Red Bull Salzburg under Jesse Marsh with Klopp.
Jürgen Klopp, Advertising Certificate
But anyone who watches football on TV will see Klopp often – and not just as Liverpool coach. Because German is one of the most popular, if not the most famous, degrees in Germany today. Klopp has already used his winning smile for countless products and brands, from wheat beer to automobiles to financial products. For a while, it is said that every third Opel buyer chose the brand only because of Klopp, thanks to which she managed to get rid of her old image a little.
Although he has not always been selective when it comes to selection: he has been criticized for his commitment as a pioneer of Deutsche Vermögensberatung AG – the financial sales team is controversial due to its brokerage practices and commission system. However, he ended an advertising partnership with a German insurance company in 2011 when it became known that one of the company’s subsidiaries had organized a sexual orgy for its representatives in Budapest.
This is how much Jürgen Klopp earns
Today we see a club in the pub, a club on the beach, a club in the kitchen – the result is a huge income outside the coaching business. According to estimates, he should increase his annual salary which is allegedly up to 18 million euros by about seven million euros from advertising contracts.
Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola
But the smile on the German’s face can also disappear: it is said that he can be strict and even tough towards players. Like Pep Guardiola, his big league rival, Klopp preaches uncompromising attacking football – unlike Carlo Ancelotti, for example. But that’s the one thing they have in common with Guardiola because, like Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, he happens to be an unreachable and somewhat boring specialist who pushes players around like characters in complex match plans. On the other hand, Klopp does not show his tactical skills in an intrusive and dogmatic way: the players are people, not materialists.
class instead of mass
This can be seen in the careful shopping programme: while Guardiola regularly goes on a big shopping spree for Manchester City thanks to the millions from Abu Dhabi, Klopp picks raisins from the transfer market. Examples include former Bayern player Thiago or Colombian Luis Diaz. They were incorporated into the world of Klopp with surprising speed. Compared to other clubs, the expenses were not exorbitant; Even city rival Everton are said to have spent more in recent years – and they have been threatened with relegation until the end of the season. Klopp and sporting director Michael Edwards, who will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, have put their faith in class over quantity and made sure the new players fit in not only sportingly but mentally as well. This was already evident when Mohamed Salah signed in 2017 – with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, he formed the most dangerous trio in Europe.
Klopp, Bayern Munich and football is a heart affair
Said Mane is said to be on trial by the club that Klopp’s friend Campino once sang to which he would never go. Bayern Munich was not an option for Klopp’s team either – the German record champions several times tried to lure the coach to Munich. Klopp calmly said he would have won more titles with Bayern Munich. Klopp conveys this feeling that football is above all a matter of my heart like no other – his players, his fans and the entire football world.
