Jazz Festival 2022: Launching with Jazz Stars | NDR.de – Culture – Music

American jazz singer, Melody Gardot, performed in the port of Hamburg for the start of the festival. The singer has already been compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone. She has just released her new album “Entre eux deux”. Also on the main stage were saxophonist Stephanie Luthermoser with pieces from her new album “Hamburg”, as well as the Moka Ifti Orchestra, well known from the series “Babylon Berlin”, with music from the 1920s.

Saturday’s highlights include a performance by guitarist Miles Davis and Grammy Award winner John McLaughlin and a concert by Hamburg Jazz Award winner Sylvain Strauss with NDR Bigband.

Music ranges from swing to soul to technique

“In terms of content and atmosphere, Elbjazz is perhaps Germany’s most diverse jazz festival. With its unique and stunning harbor backdrop,” says Alexander Schulz, Festival Director of Elbjazz. The festival begins with the best weather in Hamburg. The main stage of Elbjazz is located on the Blohm + Voss site amidst the port’s cranes and containers.

Altogether there will be around 50 concerts with international and national acts, not just from traditional jazz: Elbjazz also lives through its musical repertoire from Swing, Funk, Soul and Pop to folklore. Old and young should find their own personal style of jazz genre here. Techno and Jazz: This is also possible in Elbjazz, just as a tribute to “magic violinist” Helmut Zacharias, who pioneered swing jazz and easy listening.

There will be Niels Landgren, NDR Bigband, and singers Lady Blackbeard and Judy Jackson. This time Max Hare is not the singer, but the piano.

Festival at Large: “As if there had never been a pandemic.”

According to Alexander Schultz, there is a particular challenge for the festival organizers: “We are the first to prove that festivals and cultural performances function again in a rich, large and generous environment of more than 10,000 visitors and are completely harmless and safe – as if there had never been an epidemic.” There are still tickets for the jazz. In the past few years, there have only been concerts in the video stream.

Various places in Hamburg

The main church of St. Catherine in Speicherstadt is one of the venues at this year’s Elbjazz Festival. There are also stages north of the Elbe in Hafencity. The Great Hall of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and an open-air theater in the front yard of the Elbphilharmonie are also venues.
