The spectators could hardly be accommodated. With the final whistle, Oldenburg fans stormed the field and celebrated their champions being promoted there. After a close and exhausting game in the summer temperatures, the two VfB players were exhausted in each other’s arms. Sing “No More Fourth Class” on the field – after 25 years, VfB is back in professional football!

Oldenburg with plenty of opportunities

The Capitals tried to increase the pressure from the start due to the going problem, but VfB had opportunities. After a rebound, Max Wegner missed a huge opportunity to take the lead and was stopped by BFC goalkeeper Dimitri Staglia. In the 17th minute, after a thrilling flight from Stajella, and in the 28th minute, Oldenburg captain Wegner got another chance to score. But the 33-year-old was only able to celebrate in the 34th minute. Wegner triumphed in the penalty area, and also played around Stajlija and actually won. The playing field was upside down.

BFC surprisingly tied

BFC, which has been a disappointment across the board so far, now has its back to the wall. But after the backwardness, the people of Berlin woke up – and drew. Niklas Brandt scored in the 44th minute to equalize 1-1 in the first half. Otherwise, Oldenburg dominated the attack of the guests, BFC striker Chistian Beck was disqualified.

VfB lucky after the break

That changed in the second round – and put Lower Saxony in trouble. VfB lost access to the match, Berlin threw everything forward and had great chances. Within 60 seconds, Beck Berlin hit the post first and then hit the crossbar in the next corner (56′, 57′). VfB could not stop the Berlin striker’s cross passes, and the next chance for Beck to put Berlin ahead came in the 67th minute. This time he saved Marcel Appiah before the line.

VfB fans supported their team to the best of their ability, and were running out of it. The focus was on not accepting another goal and equalizing over time. On the other hand, the BFC was slowed down in its last attack by the supporters who traveled with them. The match was briefly interrupted by fireworks and police officers were stationed in front of the far building, and there was also eight minutes of injury time.

Berlin goal comes too late

In the sixth minute of extra time, Andor Boliki made it 2-1 for BFC. Getting up again was nail biting for VfB. Oldenburg threw themselves into every attack by the guests in the last few seconds – and they were replaced by the final whistle. The rest was blue and white cheers.
