In Baden-Württemberg, the Pentecost holiday begins on Saturday. You can find out everything you need to know about your trip here.
Whitsun is now part of the main holiday season in Baden-Württemberg. Since vacations are sometimes much cheaper than summer vacation, many families in the country use the two-week school vacation to travel during this time. With the state of Baden-Württemberg, only Bavaria and Saarland have the longest Pentecost holiday. In other federal states, summer vacation begins at the end of June or the beginning of July.
Although the holidays only start in three federal states, ADAC Traffic Club anticipates plenty of road traffic jams. Because many short vacationers will also be outside during the Pentecost holidays. According to the ADAC, the desire to travel is similar to what it was before the Corona pandemic. The Traffic Club expects the greatest disturbances on Friday afternoon, in southern Germany also on Saturday morning and on White Monday.
The ADAC has identified nearly two dozen particularly stressful pathways. In addition to the main urban routes in Hamburg, Berlin, Stuttgart, Cologne, Frankfurt and Munich, these include routes to the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. For Baden-Württemberg, ADAC calls these highways:
– A5 Hattenbacher Drake – Frankfurt – Karlsruhe – Basel
– A 6 Kaiserslautern – Mannheim – Heilbronn – Nuremberg
– A 7 Hamburg – Hanover – Würzburg – Ulm – Vossen / Reut
– A 8 Karlsruhe – Stuttgart – Munich – Salzburg
– A 81 Stuttgart – vocals

Many vacationers will also need patience abroad, particularly on the Tauern, Inntal, Rheintal, Brenner autobahns (Austria) and Gotthard Road (Switzerland). The same applies to the main roads to the Croatian coast. After the Pentecost weekend, ADAC expects another traffic jam on Wednesday before Corpus Christi, before the big wave of return flights begins on June 18 and 19.
The tank discount has been available in Germany since June 1 – the energy tax has been reduced until the end of August. As a result, there are currently very strong fluctuations and differences between individual gas stations. This also means that it is not entirely clear in which country fuel prices are currently the cheapest. Italy and Austria tend to be slightly below our current level. France is still a little lower than our current prices, but a little more expensive on average than the other two neighboring countries.
In Switzerland, a liter of premium gasoline is a little more expensive than here, but the price of diesel in particular is much higher than ours. The opposite is true in the Netherlands, where the price of a super is much more expensive than in Germany. So if you are going to Switzerland and Holland, it is better to refuel in Germany.
Initially, diesel and gasoline prices in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate fell by four to ten percent in the morning. The tank discount is not fully valid yet.
Even if the number of passengers has not yet returned to the level it was before the Corona pandemic, airports expect significant growth in passenger numbers again. Stuttgart Airport expects up to 500,000 passengers and nearly 4,000 flights for two weeks after the Pentecost holiday. For comparison: in the record year 2019 before the pandemic, 700,000 passengers were counted in the same period. The most popular destination is Antalya in Turkey before Palma de Mallorca.
Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH lost about 24.7 million euros in 2021. The reason was the effects of the Corona pandemic. Are there numbers in black this year?
If you are traveling by plane, you should be prepared for longer waiting times at check-in and at security checks. According to the airlines, there is still a shortage of personnel in handling and security personnel. Stuttgart Airport advises to go to the security checkpoint 90 minutes before departure. The airlines also indicate the possibility of online check-in and advise that you take as little hand luggage as possible.
The €9 nationwide ticket has been valid since the beginning of June. You can also go on vacation with this ticket until the end of August. However, the €9 ticket is only valid for local public transport, ie on buses, subways and regional trains. The ticket is not valid on long-distance trains of the Deutsche Bahn, ie ICE, IC and EC. There is one exception in Baden-Württemberg: the €9 ticket is also valid on IC connections on the Gäubahn route from Stuttgart to the western part of Lake Constance to Singen.
Deutsche Bahn expects full trains on Pentecost. So special trains are used on weekend trips that are in high demand, for example between Munich and Hamburg. The Minister of Transport for Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Hermann (the Greens), nevertheless fears that the trains will be overloaded. Since construction work in progress will also continue into Pentecost weekend, there may be longer travel times, train or cancellations for some transportation.
Many have already bought a €9 ticket – they can also use it from Wednesday. An overview of what consumers can expect.

In general, vacations are becoming more expensive for many people in Baden-Württemberg. The reason for this is the goods and merchandise whose prices have risen in recent weeks due to the war in Ukraine, such as gas, fuel and food. This also causes problems for hotels and restaurants in the country. They have raised prices step by step over the past few weeks. However, there are areas in Baden-Württemberg that can look forward to occupying an entire family on Pentecost, for example Lake Constance. According to Tourismus Marketing Baden-Württemberg, things are not so rosy in other areas. There are sometimes severe differences in the number of tourists.
