Will the old kindergarten in Dänisch-Nienhof become a place of culture?
Schwedenk.Life can soon return to the former kindergarten in Dänisch-Nienhof. After about 60 children and staff from the Schwedenk Parents Initiative moved into the new building next door at the beginning of January, a search for later use of the house is now underway.

The building is empty
The imposing building on the outskirts of Dänisch-Niendorf is still deserted. Empty windows and closed doors characterize the picture – the children are now roaming the house next door. In the small courtyard in front of the building, nature has already reclaimed its space among the cobblestones. Hardly anything reminds us of the building’s decades-old use as a kindergarten sponsored by the Schwedenk Parents Initiative. Now there are indications of later use for cultural purposes.
“The final decision has not yet been made,” asserts Mayor of Schwedenk Sönke-Peter Paulsen. “But it became clear that it could go in the direction of more cultural use.” It is for this reason that cooperation with the “Kreiskultur” project has now been sought.

50 participants in the workshop
In the middle of the month, a launch event for the “Creative Café” project was held in front of the former kindergarten. The interest was great. According to the mayor, more than 50 citizens from many parts of Schwedenk municipality came to work on the future of the former kindergarten. “That was a great start,” Paulsen says happily. “The great interest shows that people from many regions want to participate and actively help shape it.”
Project managers Tobias Aust and Jorid Höffken took the opportunity to introduce themselves and the project. “We learned a lot from the discussions and received a lot of suggestions from the residents with us,” Tobias Ost said afterwards. Jorid Höffken added: “It’s the private stories and experiences of people and special places in society that matter most to us.”
The organizers recorded private spaces in the community on a map and collected Schwedeneckers’ ideas about the additional use of the old kindergarten on a pegboard. Participants also voted on how to proceed.
Working with graffiti
The choice fell on a joint art project with Rendsburg graffiti artist Chezwin Benson. And he, along with people old and young from Schwedenck, wants to design the nursery’s entrance wall with graffiti. A color campaign is planned for Saturday, June 11th from 10am to 5pm. All materials and work clothes are provided by the organizers, and participation is free.

“There is no age limit. The invitation says ‘Anyone who can carry a can of paint can spray.’ The food of the day must be brought with you, but it can also be purchased at the store next door. To be able to estimate how many people are interested in the graffiti campaign, it is necessary to register with Project Director Tobias Aust via email: aust@kreiskultur.org.
Carrier of local culture
In the District Culture Project, the Rendsburger Nordkolleg, School of Music, State Theatre, State Museums and the Rendsburger Ring Adult Education Center work together to shape the challenges of the future with culture and art in the countryside there. Projects are always done alongside residents and under the supervision of artists.
