‘Go away too much’ – sports news on ice hockey, winter sports and more says the German Football Association’s (DFB) team for the European Women’s Championship in England

National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg wants to play the European Championship not with Almuth Schulte, but with Merle Froms in goal. Even the team games are a big challenge for the women of the Football Association.

With captain Alexandra Pope of Wolfsburg as the most experienced player, Merle Froome of Frankfurt as No. 1 in goal and his big ambitions, German footballers begin their preparations for the European Championship.

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg undestrainer nominated the temporary 28-man squad for the tournament from July 6 to 31 in England on May 31. “I have great confidence in the team. The goal is for us to make great progress in this European championship,” the 54-year-old said at a press conference at the German Football Association’s headquarters in Frankfurt/Main.

However, the record European champion is not among the top favorites this time around. “It may lead to an underestimation of us or that,” Voss-Tecklenburg said. She chose Spain, France, the Netherlands, England, Sweden, Norway and Denmark as contenders for the title. Germany takes on two of these teams in the preliminary round: European runners-up Denmark is the top contender on July 8, then plays highly-ranked Spain (12 July) and Finland (16 July). Hosts England could stand in the way of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Goalkeeper Frooms remains number one

One thing is already clear before the first game: goalkeeper Almoth Schulte must continue to stand behind her opponent, Merle Froms. “Merle has been number one for three years, so nothing changes in this situation,” Vos Tecklenburg said. Schulte, the Olympic champion in Wolfsburg, had recently expressed his hope to return between positions, saying: “I don’t see that the decision has already been made.”

After giving birth to her twins, the 31-year-old has been part of the DFB’s pick for quite some time. Schulte will move to Angel City FC in Los Angeles, USA after the European Championship. The heir to the 64-times national player at Wolfsburg is fromms of all people. The 27-year-old last played for Eintracht Frankfurt for two years, but started her career in the German Football League. “Merle did a very, very nice performance with us, which is why Merle is running as the top seed,” Voss Tecklenburg said.

Women in Wolfsburg are German champions

The initial setup of your team will take place from 5-9 June at the new DFB campus in Frankfurt. Except for the long-injured 31-year-old Bob (113 internationals), Wolfsburg’s players are still missing. Championship and cup winners, such as Bayern Munich, each have eight players in the European Championship squad. This number will be reduced to 23 players before the final action from June 21-29 in Herzogenaurach. On June 24th there is an international friendly match against Switzerland in Erfurt.

The only foreign professionals in the squad are Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Sarah Dabritz and Chelsea goalkeeper Anne Catherine Berger. Dzenifer Marozan from Olympique Lyonnais, winner of the Champions League, due to a ruptured cruciate ligament, and pregnant Melanie Leopoles had already canceled her participation in the European Championship.

It is difficult to assess the true strength of the German national team. Recently, there was a real 2-3 defeat against Serbia in the World Cup qualifiers. The Women’s Confederation missed out on the 2019 World Cup in the quarter-finals against Sweden and thus missed the summer games in Tokyo as Olympic champions in Rio 2016. “It’s a European Championship that is a sporting challenge. But we will meet every challenge,” Voss-Tecklenburg said.
