The second step in four years
In 2018, Brita Buttkewitz opened Janny’s Eis as a franchisee at August-Bebel-Straße 17a in Grevesmühlen. In March 2020, I moved diagonally across the street to August-Bebel-Strasse 18. Now follows the next move to the “Altes Rathaus” hostel. She and her husband, Jörn Batkowitz, who also want to open a snack bar and offer space for offices and cultural events in the basement, are not the only tenants in the building that belongs to the city. Last year, the Northwest Mecklenburg District Business Development Agency moved to the upper and lower floors.
On Friday, it still looks like a major construction site when pioneering couple Britta and Jorn Batkowitz stand at the inn’s conservatory. The craftsman is working on sticking the base where the cabinets will be installed. In front of him is an ice cream table. Several chests are placed around them, which also need to be emptied. At the same time, the old site is mainly cleaned on August-Bebel-Straße 18. Because this space is already as good as it has been cleared. “On Sunday, after closing time, we helped many of our regular customers weed out,” say Britta and Jorn Batkowitz. This work lasted two and a half hours. The heavy equipment was then moved to the new home on Monday.
Now, of course, things need to be done quickly, because time is of the essence. On Wednesday, June 1st, Britta Putkowitz would like to serve her famous ice cream creations at the “Altes Rathaus” inn. This also includes the three new ice cream flavors: Almond, Dark Chocolate, and Orange Mint Sherbet. Bubble pancakes or a strawberry sundae are probably the hits. And since it’s Children’s Day, younger guests can look forward to some surprises like the Wheel of Wealth and ticket sales. Janny’s Eis will be open daily from 10am-6pm starting June 1.

Coworking Space Jobs
However, customers will not yet find a fully furnished and remodeled ice cream shop in the inn’s conservatory on June 1. On the other hand, it will not be possible in the short time available. On the other hand, the Buttkewitz couple is said to have other shows in addition to the shows from Janny’s Eis. They want to help set up a snack bar in the conservatory, where visitors can eat fruit, salads, bread and other snacks. This type of supply is intended primarily for everyone who uses one of the five or six co-working spaces with an office and Internet in the restaurant area. Anyone who prefers to work on their PC is highly welcome here rather than working at home or in the company. This may be possible from around September. Until then, not only jobs need to be created, but also some work needs to be done in the restaurant area and in the kitchen.
But Yorn Batkowitz’s plans go further. In the basement of the house, the artist known as DJ Qbat outside the confines of Grevesmühlen wants to give musicians, other cultural groups or individuals the opportunity to perform. “This might be the smallest stage up north here,” says Patkowitz, referring to the area in the basement, which is only a few square meters and is a little higher. The entrepreneur is currently unable to say when this will happen. The basement needs an overhaul. Patkowitz thinks that could continue into next year.
My favorite place in Grevesmühlen
But Jörn Batkowitz’s gaze is now also directed toward the opening of Janny’s Eis. The line of business for which his wife is responsible in the space leased by the city. She also wants to use the outside area, setting up tables and chairs for guests. And how the inn should present itself to its future guests, she and her husband have very clear ideas. “We want to make this place my favorite place in Grevesmühlen for people. It should become a meeting place for everyone,” they say.
