Change of legal department: this will change for Ukrainian refugees in Wolfsburg from June 1
Wolfsburg. From 1 June, refugees from Ukraine can receive benefits under Book II of the Social Act (SGB ll) – hence Hartz IV – from the Employment Center in place of the previous asylum seeker benefits. In addition, the Job Center supports assignment at work. In general, this should lead to refugees becoming self-employed and, for example, renting a place to live independently. The city of Wolfsburg and the job center have now provided more information about the changes.

Transferring responsibility to the duty station
By decision of the Federal Government, refugees who entered Germany between February 24 and May 31 are entitled to benefits from the employment center from June 1 if they have a residence permit or a dummy certificate. In addition to basic services, refugees are also seen as workers. As a result, it is no longer social welfare offices that are in charge, but job centers. This aims to give as many Ukrainian refugees as possible access to services.

Standard needs, health insurance and accommodation
In terms of benefits, there are mainly standard benefits, which are based on the people who live in the family and are categorized according to age. These secure livelihoods, such as shopping or clothing. In special situations that are not covered by these benefits, there are additional needs, which include nutrition related to medicine, for example in the case of diabetes. Besides the Job Centre, refugees can get health insurance, long-term care insurance, and clarify matters related to employment at work. In connection with employment, the Job Center also organizes educational or language courses. In addition to the one-time grants for initial equipment, there is a right to rent, in which the work center takes into account the maximum rent limits depending on the people living in the house.
Sending orders quickly and creating accounts is important now
To ensure that public benefits are paid as smoothly as possible, the Wolfsburg Job Center recommends that refugees create a so-called basic account with a bank of their choice. According to the Managing Director of Career Center Ingo Schrader, having your own account makes the process a lot easier. The Job Center requires that applications be submitted immediately so that persons due from June 1 will receive benefits in a timely manner. There are currently about 500 applications. The duty station tries to process applications as quickly as possible, but usually it takes two to three days to process.
Due to basic security, use of local public transportation for refugees will not be free from June 1. The Verkehrsverbund Region Braunschweig recommends purchasing a €9 ticket, which is valid throughout Germany.

Continuous exchange with refugees
Events in Reislingen and Detmerode were planned by the city of Wolfsburg before the summer. There should be room for any questions, including childcare or studying. Time and time again, daily questions from refugees arrive in the city. The site is now available in Ukrainian to facilitate the exchange of information. Overall, the city is keen to constantly improve communication, according to city councilor Iris Booth.
