BERLIN (dpa) – Felix Magath, who is very offensive in expectations, cannot foresee what will happen next at Hertha FC.
“The general meeting is on Sunday. And the whole club is in the dark,” says the veteran coach, who has just led the capital’s team relegation. “I don’t think anyone knows how Hertha will last.”
There is a lot in the balance at Westend, the club facing yet another turmoil after a disappointing season. It seems that at least one successor to Magath has been found. According to a report by Kickers, the Berliners agree with Sandro Schwartz, who is currently training at Dynamo Moscow. However, there was no confirmation on Friday. Herta said the club was not involved in the speculation. Schwartz, the former coach of 1.FSV Mainz 05, still plays the Russian Cup final against rivals Spartak with his current club Dinamo Moscow on Sunday. Then it can be announced.
Herta’s week is full of events
It’s going fast for Berliners this week. On Monday the relief of staying in the league in Hamburg, on Tuesday the departure of President Werner Gegenbauer and Chief Financial Officer Ingo Schiller. On Wednesday, Gegenbauer distributed $1 million against investor Lars Windhurst. Sunday’s tense public meeting follows, at which Windhurst wants to give a speech.
As usual, Magath finds clear words for the amount of work that new coach and managing director Freddy Bobic has to do: everything has to change at Hertha. “I felt almost no support anywhere,” the 68-year-old said. “He tried one or the other, but I never felt like the club was defending itself against relegation.” Team, Club, Environment: Magath sees construction sites everywhere.
Bobic leaves no doubt that fundamental changes are necessary. “Now is the time and the last sign for everyone, not only at the club but also in the environment, to understand what it means to go through difficult times. This relegation was the last chance,” Bobic said.
Bobic wants more attack
The 50-year-old expects a more attractive style of play from the new coach. “I want to see football that is bold, attacking, not backward. Our football has been very negative,” Bobic said during the week. The coach must bring “character and fire to Hertha”.
But as the last remaining actor, Bobbik is more concerned than ever about keeping the club together. The managing director is very concerned about a mass revolution in the meeting. Because even if Gegenbauer hindered the possibility of canceling the selection: it would not become boring in the exhibition halls. If the members of the entire Executive Committee are voted on, there will be a serious paralysis of the decision-making bodies at the planning stage which is very important for the upcoming season.
“We have to know what is important. We have to remain able to work, we need continuity,” Bobic demanded.
The start of the election campaign
It will be interesting to see the reaction of the members towards the investor. In the past few weeks, a poster has been hung in the Hertha fan block reading: “Windhorst and Gegenbauer are out”. In turn, it remains to be seen whether Windhorst, who has already invested around 375 million euros in the club, has the prospect of getting new money and what conditions it will be subject to.
However, presidential candidate Kay Bernstein, an entrepreneur and former Ultra, doesn’t expect any major arguments. He reassured himself, “There will be no three hours of rioting in the general meeting. It will be objective and calm.” One thing is clear: the election campaign will finally begin. At the end of June and beginning of July, the new president will be elected at an extraordinary general meeting.
