Some people don’t particularly like their smell. Others complain that it makes the skin very blotchy and greasy. However, we must use sunscreen. Good sun protection is especially important for children.

Wearing sunscreen is like wearing seat belts in a car: it’s annoying but important for safety. Since it is not enough to wear a seat belt once in a lifetime, it is not enough to apply the lotion only once.

Questions and answers about important (vital) protection, especially for children:

What does sunscreen do?

Sunscreen blocks what’s called the sun’s ultraviolet rays. It protects against sunburn and diseases such as skin cancer. But no sunscreen can stop all UV rays, a little of it always gets through.

However, the cream is good at delaying sunburn: If it has an SPF of 50, for example, it takes about 50 times the time that the cream does not form for a sunburn.

How useful is sunscreen?

A lot helps a lot: Most people don’t use enough sunscreen. After applying the lotion over the entire body five times, the bottle should be empty – at least this is true for adults who use a 200ml bottle.

Children should apply a full teaspoon to their face alone. If you swim or play sports, you should also apply the cream. Because the cream can be removed by washing or rubbing.

Otherwise it is recommended to lubricate again every two hours.

What is the necessary sun protection factor?

According to the German Society of Pediatrics and Adolescents (DGKJ), the SPF of children’s sunscreen should be at least 30, which means that 97 percent of the light is absorbed. “An SPF of more than 30 increases the protective effect only slightly – using an adequate amount of lotion or cream is more important,” says DGKJ.

DGKJ experts also advise not to be stingy with the cream. “Under no circumstances should you skimp on the cream, sunscreen should be used generously. The cream should be applied well at least twice daily and again after each bath.”

Is Expensive Kids Sunscreen Better?

Children’s skin needs special protection from the sun. In a test by Stiftung Warentest, the cheapest children’s sunscreens came out on top. Achieve. They provide good protection against radiation and provide the skin with plenty of moisture.

During the review by Stiftung Warentest, the focus was on the practical use and effect of the preparations. The criteria used in the evaluation were, for example, ‘compliance with declared protection’, ‘moisture enrichment’, ‘application’ and ‘labeling and packaging’.

What baby sunscreens work well in the test?

Four of the 17 creams tested by Stiftung Warentest received the highest rating of “very good” – and all come from discount stores or drugstores.

Lidl’s “Cien Sun Kids” and Müller’s “Lavozon Kids Med” have an overall rating of “Very Good” (1.4). Both have SPF 50+.

The second place was awarded to “Ombra Easy Protect Kids” from Aldi (SPF 30) and “Sunozon Kids” from Rossmann (SPF 50) – also with a score of “Very good” (1.5).

Eleven other sunscreens received the “good” rating – including those from Bübchen, Edeka, Eucerin, Nivea and dm.

Expensive natural cosmetics for children sometimes fail due to “inadequate”: sunscreen “Baby and Babies” from Eco Cosmetics costs much more than the test winners. According to Stiftung Warentest, it only provides adequate protection against long-wavelength UVA rays.

What is the importance of a high sun protection factor?

According to Stiftung Warentest, an important criterion is that children use products with a high or very high SPF: 30, 50 or 50+. In principle, they can use the same sunscreen as their parents.

“Most children’s sunscreens are labeled fragrance-free. This is important for those kids who are sensitive to fragrances. Three sprays in the test contained fragrance. However, we did not find any significant fragrances in any of the products,” says the test report. .
