Football – the coach’s castling record: series, Seville and reconciliations – sports

FRANKFURT/MAIN (DPA) – In a beautiful light blue shirt, Adi Hütter smiled mischievously a little – but he was also tormented.

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s coach has been confronted head-on with what he thinks of the fact that his former club Eintracht Frankfurt entered the Europa League final – no longer allowed to play with him, but with his successor and compatriot Oliver Glasner. “What do you think of what I’m thinking,” said Hütter, who seemed thoughtful but also openly congratulated the Hessian club about CEO Axel Hellmann on this success.

XXL’s training bout last summer was new to the Bundesliga and the changes in Frankfurt and Gladbach in particular document how things could go. Hütter left Eintracht in dismay after the last few matches went wrong after the change was announced. At Gladbach, he was about to usher in a new era as successor to Marco Rose, who had moved to Dortmund. On the other hand, Glasner had to repeatedly answer why he left Wolfsburg as a Champions League club and switched to the Europa League instead.

Now, Hutter and Rose, who were already plotting a career advancement, have had a particularly difficult season – and Glasner could win their first-ever Europa League title with his new club on May 18 in Seville against Glasgow Rangers. Fellow Hütter, who spoke and reconciled with the management of the Frankfurt club last week, kept his fingers frank. “There are so many great moments,” said the Austrian. “You can only be proud of that. I hope the trophy goes to Main.”

Master and deputy is not enough?

In terms of the schedule, Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich and Rose at Dortmund have done it all right, but the demands are particularly high in these two positions. “I know I can do things better than I did,” Nagelsmann publicly admitted. It wasn’t easy to follow Hansi Flick and his “big footsteps”. Flick had won the treble with the Munich team in the 2019/20 season and then followed it up with other titles in the national and international super cups.

Nagelsmann, who came from Leipzig, “only” continued the championship streak and allowed himself big slips in cup competitions. A 0:5 in the cup against Gladbach and the exit of Villarreal in the Champions League does not correspond to the high goals of the Bundesliga entry. “I don’t think that’s enough for Bayern,” admitted the 34-year-old Nagelsmann.

Rose was also less well-liked for the Bundesliga’s performance. The finish in three cup competitions (the DFB Cup, the Champions League, the European League) left its mark, and 51 goals in the Bundesliga received a cloud over the overall picture. Future sporting director Sebastian Kehl said last weekend that Rose would remain coach “as of today”. The next day, Kiel corrected himself and explained that the next season was being planned together.

Stability in Leverkusen

Leverkusen and Leipzig were also part of the practice rollover. The Saxons had to replace Nagelsmann, who emigrated to Munich, and did so with Jesse Marsh. With no success under the American, Domenico Tedesco came through the season, returning victories with him. Leipzig could win the first title in the club’s history in the DFB Cup, and just missed the Europa League final. The change from Bayer Leverkusen brought stability. After Peter Bosz and Hannes Wolf, Werkself relied on Gerardo Seoane and made it to the first class without any issues. The return in cup competitions was mixed.

Few changes this season

What roulette did in the summer of 2021 anyway: fewer disturbances and changes to the coach in the current season, with only Bielefeld, Leipzig, Wolfsburg (Florian Kohfeldt succeeding Marc van Bommel) and twice Hertha changing.

Clubs have restricted their contracts for the long term, so there is no other big breakup on the agenda this summer. Rose in the BVB, sometimes Glasner in Frankfurt and especially Hütter in Gladbach, hasn’t always been uncontested, but new commitments along with high transfer fees and long contracts have prevented clubs from quickly taking drastic action.
