“W wie Wissen Spezial” on TV today and broadcast live with “Die Methanjäger”

James Toretto, a native of New York, pursues an invisible threat. On behalf of environmental protection organizations in Germany and Europe, he is looking for hidden sources of methane – for unnoticed gas leaks. The methane hunter finds them. Everywhere in the infrastructure that supplies Germany and Europe with natural gas. Methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas. According to current information from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, its impact on the climate is 108 times greater than that of carbon dioxide over a period of 20 years. Methane leaks are factored into Germany’s greenhouse gas balance, but the numbers come from industry – and they are estimates only. No gas supplier tries to find leaks in their systems themselves. So far there are no legal regulations obligating them to do so. Research in the United States has shown that estimated methane emissions can actually be 60 percent higher. That’s why James Toretto is trying to track down the leaks in Germany and Europe. And he’s not alone in his search for undiscovered synthetic sources of methane. At the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research in Kiel, researchers look at oil and gas wells in the North Sea. Their investigations and projections so far have shown that methane is leaking from about a third of nearly 15,000 wells. Our cities also emit methane, as demonstrated by Jia Chen of the Technical University of Munich with a measurement network unique in the world. Methane hunters want to achieve one thing: they want to provide reliable data and educate politicians and industry about a problem that has hitherto been underestimated. Man-made methane emissions are changing the climate much more than previously thought. The EU Parliament has now recognized this and wants to limit methane emissions with a new set of rules. If methane emissions can be significantly reduced, the rise in atmospheric temperature can in fact be slowed dramatically within a few years. This program is available online one day before it airs and thereafter for five years in the ARD media library. (Source: ARD, quoted by FUNKE magazines)
