Mirko Drotschmann reaches millions of people through his YouTube videos. What is the secret of the success of Zornheimer, who has already given an interview with Chancellor Angela Merkel?
Zornheim – Mirko Drotschmann still has quite a few calls for kebab or pizza. Freelance journalist and vlogger received this thank you. Through one of his YouTube videos, “MrWissen2Go”, as he calls himself on the online video platform, he helped the student achieve the highest mark of 15 points. A success not only for a high school student, but also for Mirko Druchmann.
Explaining current political and social developments from around the world to young people in an understandable way is the goal of the 32-year-old, who has studied history and cultural studies. When the CDU elected a new leader for the party about four weeks ago, Druchmann quickly published an article on the Internet: “New Chancellor Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer?”. He also recently devoted himself to the things that will change in 2019 and the immigration agreement on his YouTube channel “Wissen2Go”. The channel now belongs to “funk”, the ARD and ZDF online service. Born in Baden, he is also responsible for ‘the history to know’.
The freelance journalist, who will also direct ZDF “Terra X” this year, reaches many viewers with his cinematic contributions. About 860,000 users have subscribed to the “Wissen2Go” channel – its population is more than that of Frankfurt am Main. Singles videos like “What If Hitler Wins the War” or “Weimar Republic” have been viewed over a million times.
Druchmann’s explanatory pieces were well received. What is his recipe for success? Many young people are interested in politics and history, but do not understand them. I have to break up the topics so that everyone can understand.”
In order to reach viewers in the online world, it is not at all important to look stylish and elegant in front of the camera. Close communication with the young audience is useful, for example, he responds to comments on his videos. By the way, the family man receives many ideas from the public for his video contributions. In the end, the most important thing is to be original and know what moves the viewer. Of course, his age helps him – and the weak point for German rap. “It’s mostly about topics that are popular with young people.”
The 32-year-old, who moved from the Karlsruhe region to Reinheisen a few years ago after completing his training at SWR, produces videos in his small studio in Zornheim. Here he is at home. “I am a big fan of Italy. And especially in the summer, here in Rheinhessen, there is really a Tuscan touch.” From Zornheim, Drotschmann also traveled to Berlin to produce a special production. Because as one of four “YouTubers”, he interviewed Chancellor Angela Merkel before the 2017 federal elections. How is his experience with the head of government in a live interview? “Many high-ranking politicians are surrounded by an aura of power. That was not the case with her at all,” Druchmann looks back.
One thing was also important to him during the conversation with the consultant: to do his work objectively and impartially. He found it difficult to accept when some journalists tried to educate readers, viewers or listeners. Journalists are not activists. I want to present impartial facts.”
Despite this allegation, he was repeatedly accused of malicious reporting. Criticism has gone so far that there have been “two or three highly questionable responses”. When asked if online malice is on the rise, Druchmann replied: “There isn’t enough counter-rhetoric to hateful comments.” In any case, it is important for him to remain in the discussion with viewers. “You can vary in terms of content, but in the end you shake hands virtually.” Or, if all goes well, get an invite to lunch.
