A weak quarter led to Bayern Munich’s exit from the Euroleague Basketball Championship. On the other hand, FC Barcelona can count on its first star.
Bayern Munich basketball players missed the surprise in the Euroleague.
A poor third quarter resulted in a 72:81 (37:31) defeat in the playoffs for title favorites FC Barcelona and 2:3 in a best of five series against the Catalans. While Barcelona were in the fourth final (May 19-21 in Belgrade), the Euroleague season for coach Andrea Trencheri’s team ended.
“Great respect to the team,” Bayern Munich managing director Marko Pesic said at Magentasport. “Obviously we are disappointed that we didn’t succeed. Today I saw how important the advantage was at home.”
Favorite hosts started more focused than last time in Munich. However, Bayern Munich was not affected by 2:7 (4th minute). With round 11:0, the Munich team turned the game around and was still ahead 19:18 after the end of the first round.
Before the eyes of Barcelona president Joan Laporta, both teams lost many chances in the second quarter. The defense dominated both sides until powerful players Nick Wheeler-Papp and Eugengen Garmaz put Bayern ahead 37:31 with two long-range shots shortly before the break. “Except for a few things, it was fine,” coach Trencheri said in the first half.
But Bayern could not control former NBA professional Nikola Mirotic after the break. The former Chicago Bulls player, along with exacting Italian Nicolas Laprovittola, ensured the change again. On the other hand, Munich’s attempts rarely found the target. Therefore, thanks to 29:15 in the third quarter, Barcelona entered the last period with an eight-point lead.
Once again, Mirotic then provided Barcelona’s first double-digit lead with a three-point throw. The Bavarians never recovered from this, while the Spaniards managed to show their class. The best player for Munich was Othello Hunter with 18 points. The outstanding Laprovittola (26 points) and Mirotic (20) scored the most points for Barcelona. (dpa)
