It was April 30, 1987 at 8 p.m.: City History Culture: The Music-Circus-Ruhr opened its ring 35 years ago.

Yes, you read that correctly, it actually happened 35 years ago. It’s hard to believe. I think many of us remember the opening of the musical track – Circus – Ruhr well and some might think again wistfully. Sic transit Gloria Mundi. Two more articles will appear later. It’s 1987.

  • Clear the Ring for Music Circus Ruhr.

On April 30, 1987 at 8 pm, one of the most detailed and exciting special projects in the field of culture began in Oberhausen and invited everyone to dance in May.
Many were eagerly awaiting this event.
Six months ago, a group of young self-employed people from Oberhausen and the surrounding area were working on a circus project before the tent was pitched for a varied program of discos and live concerts. The highly successful first season of the circus-musical Ruhr ended on November 28, 1987.

  • In the last few weeks before the opening, the workload has increased again.

In order to be able to handle the workload in a timely manner, 20 people worked around the clock in the last few weeks before opening. Everyone did their best. People pulled materials, laid cables, installed lights, amplifiers, and disco equipment, and provided “circus-appropriate” equipment. A few days before the opening, the finer details were once again worked out. Everything should be fine: the predatory cage from which the taming numbers were introduced is now a cockatiel cage. This is where the drinks were served to the guests, and the firefighters and the building regulations office agreed to this.

  • Help the shepherds. Rental contracts have been signed.

Busch-Roland Circus has offered a tent for young entrepreneurs from April 30 to October 31. Negotiations were held with the city and an application was submitted for a building permit and a lease agreement with the city. The patrons were a brewery and a beverage wholesaler.

  • Who are the men behind this great idea?

There were nine well known people on the scene through different activities who had a great idea last year 1986. They gained experience in the concert scene in the center of Altenburg, in the compressed air house and at the Bolleke pub.

  • Let me introduce. Initiators.

A “musical circus” in the tent, with disco and live concerts, gave young entrepreneurs a new address in the summer months of 1987 when it came to entertainment, three days a week, for people from Oberhausen and other residents of the Ruhr region. Until the end of October there were disco parties or live concerts on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Starting on April 30th with “Tanz in Den May” and on May 4th was his first concert with “Godfather of Soul”, legendary singer James Brown. We know it was a huge success. Incidentally, the organizers considered themselves not only commercial providers, but, as they assured NRZ, they wanted to “make Oberhausen more attractive in general” on the anniversary (125 years of Oberhausen).

  • What awaits us. Many.

The people, the music, the feeling
go, go…
On April 30, 1987, the circus opened its doors, uh, mange, which in fact was not a circus.
It was not the people, the animals, the sensations, but the people, the music and the sensations were on the program of the Ruhr Music Circus. In this circus, visitors were both actors and audience. The circus ring became an arena for dancing, and the predatory cage became a cocktail bar.
The focus was on the music, both from the turntable and on the live stage, tuned in to the appropriate lighting by an 80,000-watt lighting system.

Disc jockey Karsten Bochuca. Karsten and Frank Weiner, lighting technicians, made sure Ruhr's musical circus got its start on the technology car dance floor. 1987

Then the sensations, the first of which is the appearance of James Brown. On May 4th, the Godfather of Soul had the honor of holding one of the few German concerts at MCR. More exciting concert events were set up and many, many more notable events followed, as we know.

125 years old from Oberhausen has located the site. As part of the city’s memory
Music – circus – Ruhr set the tone in the Western Ruhr region. The location was perfect, as Lindnerstraße is located directly on the A42 / Emscherschnellweg, between the exits of Oberhausen-Zentrum and Buschhausen. There was ample parking at Niederhein Stadium.
