Italy, oh Italy – the country offers the best conditions for a sunny vacation on the Mediterranean: wonderful beaches, stunning natural wonders, the most beautiful Italian villages and much more. Diversity can make planning your next trip difficult. That’s why here are the nine best travel destinations in Italy for every type of vacation.
For pizza lovers and food lovers: Naples
It is eaten all over the world, but its taste is unmatched here anywhere – Neapolitan pizza. For centuries, restaurants in the southern Italian city have been fighting over who makes the best Napolitana pizza. A good place to go is Di Matteo, one of the oldest pizzerias in Naples. In a huge pizza oven, pizzas are baked with a thick crust until crispy.
Di Matteo is one of the oldest and best pizzerias in Naples.
But leave some room in your stomach, because Naples has a lot to offer – for example spaghetti or vongol (pasta with fresh oysters) or delicious desserts like sfogliatella and croissants with a sweet ricotta filling, cinnamon and the scent of orange blossom. Reisereporter Simon sure: More Italy is not possible!
For wine lovers: Tuscany
Deep green mountains, lush olive groves, bright yellow sunflower fields – could there be more landscapes for picture books? No wonder Tuscany attracts millions of visitors every year. In addition to the stunning landscapes and popular cruise destinations of Pisa and Florence, Tuscany has one foremost thing to offer: wine. And one of the best players in the world.
From the classic Chianti to the famous Cabernet Sauvignon, there is everything a wine lover’s heart could desire. The people of Tuscany have been making the perfect wine since the 8th century. So you have to try really hard to be disappointed here.
Tuscany is probably the most famous grape-growing region in Italy. Anyone who loves good red wine will not want to leave here again.
The “Sunny Garden of Italy” is the size of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region. Travel reporter Brontje calls other reasons why we love Tuscany so much.
Night owls: Milan
Milan is the fashion capital of Italy. Exclusive boutiques and expensive jewelers line up next to each other. It is not surprising that Milan is one of the most expensive cities in the world. But those who look behind the guise of the rich and the beautiful will find Italian architecture and culture to fall in love with. For example, Milan Cathedral – the landmark of the city is considered a postcard par excellence.
Milan Cathedral is the symbol of the city. From the roof of the cathedral you have a great view of the city.
After visiting Milan Cathedral, from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the modern capital, you should hurry because happy hour begins at 6 pm. In the picturesque old town there are many restaurants and bars that are zocca. A typical appetizer is made with rhubarb liqueur, crushed ice, soda, and a slice of orange.
For the adventurous: the dolomites
Vacations in the Dolomites mean pure adventure! Everything is possible at an altitude of up to 3,300 meters – whether it is skydiving, skiing or kayaking. Gorgeous panoramic photos of the mountains are second to none on top. The mountain range is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site for nothing.

Kayaking in the summer and descent in the winter – the Dolomites is a place for adventure.
By the way: “Dolomitenmann” is held once a year. Extreme athletes compete in four disciplines: mountain running, paragliding, mountain biking and whitewater kayaking. But in addition to movement, vacationers will also find wellness and relaxation, for example in the South Tyrolean Eggental.
For lovers of art and architecture: Florence
La Dolce Vita – What better than Renaissance Florence to enjoy the Italian way of life? Here you can follow in the footsteps of important artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael or Botticelli. The fully preserved old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982.
There are more than 70 museums in Florence, each of which is more worth seeing than the following. Even those who hardly have an interest in art can’t avoid visiting the Uffizi Gallery! The complex of buildings from the 16th century is worth a visit in itself – inside there are also paintings by the world’s most famous painters.
The landscape of Florence is unique and known far beyond the borders of Italy.

There’s also no way to get around the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, in the truest sense of the word, because the massive dome in the center cannot be overlooked.
For romantics: Verona
Verona is located only about 30 kilometers from the famous Lake Garda and tells perhaps the most beautiful love story there: “Romeo and Juliet”. William Shakespeare’s play is set in a medieval town in northern Italy.
Two young men in Verona fall in love hopelessly. Problem: They belong to the rival families of Montag and Capulet. The long-running feud between the two houses puts obstacles in the way of their love and leads Romeo and Juliet to commit suicide. The tragedy ends with relatives reconciling with each other.
Strange Myth: Touching the right breast of a bronze statue is said to bring good luck.
There may have been neither Romeo nor Juliet in the figure – and Shakespeare was never in Verona during his lifetime. But that doesn’t change the fact that the city sparkles with romance. The small house dating back to the 14th century in the historic center of Verona is known as “Juliet’s House”. The Shakespearean tragedy is set to take place there.
A stone balcony stands out in the courtyard, which also features a bronze statue of Juliet. There are many small colored paper pieces stuck in the walls of houses. Couples who write the love oath here should have a particularly happy relationship.
For sun lovers: the Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast, south of Sorrento on the Italian peninsula, stretches for 50 kilometers of rugged and rugged coastline. Numerous small beaches and light-colored fishing villages make the region that includes the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida a popular travel destination.
A coastal road between Salerno and Sorrento leads to picturesque villas of the past, idyllic vineyard terraces and lemon orchards. Haunt the next postcard idea. And while you are here, you must visit the cities of Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. The stretch of coast between Positano and Vietri sul Mare has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Admittedly, the Amalfi Coast has long been an insider tip — but it doesn’t make picturesque places like Positano worth seeing.
In addition to tourism, the population here lives mainly from the cultivation of lemons. There is no better place on earth to sample the local limoncello than the Amalfi Coast – with the sun on your face and your feet in the turquoise blue waters.
For historians: Pompeii
Pompeii, the once thriving Roman city in southern Italy, was buried under a meter-high layer of ash after the deadly volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The “Lost City” was rediscovered only in the middle of the 18th century.
Pompeii soon became a magnet for tourists and archaeologists, as some parts of the city are remarkably well preserved under a thick layer of ash. Today, visitors can explore the ruins exposed off the coast of the Gulf of Naples.
Pompeii: Statues, ruins, and imperfect archaeological sites take you back to the time of the ancient Romans.
In 2019, fascinating parts of the city were revealed and shown to the public for the first time in nearly 2,000 years. There is now a thermal bath made of white marble and a fresco of the ancient Romans to discover, among other things.
Set aside at least three hours to explore Pompeii – it’s a city-sized attraction, after all. If you have a full day, it is recommended to visit the neighboring city of Herculaneum, which was also destroyed by the volcanic eruption.
For families: Rome
The Italian capital is certainly not the ideal destination for a relaxing holiday. On the other hand, families get their money’s worth in Rome, because the Eternal City has something to offer for all ages, budgets, and interests. Travel Reporter Alexa tells you what to do and what not to do in the city.
There are major historical landmarks like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, but there are also fun attractions for kids – like puppet shows in the park, tossing coins in the Trevi Fountain, or standing next to a giant marble foot.
Italy’s capital and largest city is an ideal place for a family vacation.
And then, of course, there’s Vatican City, technically a state – an independent city within Rome. There you can admire the world-famous artworks of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica.
