It’s not over yet. Second division football club Holstein Kiel managed to draw 1-1 (0-0) at home to 1. FC Heidenheim on Saturday after taking the lead. However: With the remaining three match days ahead, Storks is a whopping nine points ahead of the relegation rating.

After the partial success in Round 31, Holstein coach Marcel Raab did not want to think about whether the goal had already been achieved or whether something was still wrong. The 43-year-old told NDR: “The calculations don’t make sense. It’s about playing like today and then we wouldn’t have anything to do with relegation.” But he also admitted: “We are a bit disappointed that we were not rewarded for the performance. However, the 1-1 draw against Heidenheim is a good result and we keep Dresden at a distance.”

My voice: Holstein Rap Coach: “The math doesn’t make sense” (1 minute)

The Rap team didn’t wait after kickoff, but they started out bold and energetic. It almost paid off quickly: Kwasi Ukiere and Reddt had a great opportunity to take the lead, but failed to escape Heidenheim goalkeeper Kevin Muller (sixth).

However, the North Germans were able to breathe a sigh of relief soon after when a goal by guest player Robert Liebertz was denied by video evidence of an offside position (9). The better team in the first half was KSV, but their greatest deficit was the goal. Only Wriedt (21, 42) could make a reassuring lead on the break. But it was 0-0 at the break.

Lorenz puts Holstein up front – but then Jellius backs off

The well-earned reward for the effort came shortly after the start of the second half. After Lewis Holtby’s cross from the left wing, Simon Lorenz completed the goal in the middle of the penalty area. He steered clear of the visitors’ goal but turned while jumping and headed into the upper right corner to make it 1-0 (56).

From the point of view of Storks and their fans, all was well – until the 71st minute. Holstein goalkeeper Ioannis Gelius could not block Tim Kleindienst’s very low shot from an acute angle. The ball slipped from under his body and rolled over the goal line – 1: 1.

The inhabitants of Kiel seemed battered, then pressured and had to fear 1: 2. However, the North Germans could have decided the game in their favour. Benedict Pichler missed the goal in the 86th minute.

In the end, the score remained 1-1 – also thanks to a strong save by Gelius from a free kick by Kevin Sessa (90 + 1). So Kiel will have to wait a little longer before celebrating staying in the league. The next opportunity to do it comes on Friday, but then with new leader Werder Bremen (4-1 at Schalke 04).
